Wildlife and landscape artist Rod Serbousek was born in 1958 in North Dakota. He spent his formative years in North Dakota, Montana, Colorado, Arizona and Utah. Rod spent almost every available hour in fields, open lands and deserts. His interest in wildlife came at an early age when he kept wild birds, reptiles and small mammals captured on his hiking adventures as pets . He has had a lifelong interest in falconry and has trained, flown and hunted extensively nearly every type of game hawk and falcon native to north America. His interest in these various creatures led him to sketch them with pencil and eventually paint them in acrylic and oil paints. |
His formal studies began in a Salt Lake high school art class when his instructor's husband, who also painted wildlife and western paintings, encouraged and critiqued his work. Rod won several honors at the state high school art show including several awards and a college scholarship. Rod attended Salt Lake Community College where he studied Graphic Design and received his associates degree. He has been inspired by the work of such great artists as Harry Adamson, George Inness, John Constable and Albert Bierstadt.
He has specialized in painting landscapes and game birds collecting research material from countless trips outdoors while hunting or visiting most of the western states as well as western Canada. Rod has an extensive collection of waterfowl and gamebird taxidermy mounts that he uses for accuracy when painting feather details. He also uses thousands of slides and photographs that he has taken to provide ideas and specific information for his paintings. He prefers to photograph his subject matter and develop much of the film himself. Rod has done several paintings for Ducks Unlimited in the past. In 1992 he was named the "Utah Ducks Unlimited 1992 Artist of the year" for a pheasant painting "Fast Break". From this painting, Ducks Unlimited produced a limited edition print to be used in their fund raising efforts.
Rod must have all the details right as far as the anatomy, wing positions, foot positions, plumage, etc. The painting is not finished until he is satisfied. Rod has the knowledge and the patience to make his birds come to life on the canvas. Whether it is a pintail on a calm and relaxed morning swim or a ringneck pheasant breaking cover and flying for his life. He is maturing into one of the top echelon wildlife painters who specializes in game birds.
Rod Serbousek is currently represented by Collectors Covey of Dallas, Texas; Williams Gallery in Salt Lake City, Utah and Dave Erickson Fine Arts In Salt Lake City, Utah His paintings currently are held by many private collectors as well as hospitals, law firms, banking institutions and private businesses.
